The quintessence of Vietnamese Nghê

In the world of Vietnamese sacred and mythical creatures, the dragon evokes majesty, the phoenix splendor, and the turtle quiet wisdom. Nghê, a Vietnamese mythical guardian creature, is everywhere and yet still unfamiliar to many. It stands at the gates of village communal houses, on temple roofs, beside ancestral altars, and appears across sacred architectural spaces. Though its presence has long been part of Vietnamese cultural life, its name, forms, and symbolic meanings often remain overlooked.

Following Phác họa Nghê - gã linh vật bên rìa (tentatively translated as Sketching the Nghê: The Mythical Creature on the Margins), researcher Trần Hậu Yên Thế continues his dedicated study of this distinctive emblem in The Quintessence of Vietnamese Nghê. Featuring carefully selected photographs of representative nghê figures, updated research, and recently collected fieldwork materials, the book offers a concise yet insightful introduction to the origins, forms, symbolic meanings, and beauty of the Nghê in Vietnamese culture.

From royal architecture dating back to the Lý and Trần dynasties to temples and pagodas of the Lê dynasty, and even to domestic worship spaces today, Nghê is far more than an ornamental detail. It is a living symbol of Vietnamese cultural heritage, embodying belief, aesthetics, craftsmanship, and folk imagination. Compact in form yet expansive in spirit, The Quintessence of Vietnamese Nghê invites readers into the quiet depth of Vietnamese traditional and folk art, as well as sacred architecture.
